0.Enhance Thailand Construction Industry

Introduction to this Blog

Begin

I started thinking to write this blog for the first time in April 2017 as a novice blogger. After passing through long years of experience in the construction management, I dreamed of seeing the country like Thailand evolved to become a developed country like other civilized nation. Until now, my expectation is falling down to benchmarking with southern neighbors and hope not to fall further. With some more spare time at the moment, I am able to bring about my experience and skill in writing to write something for at least if someone could visit and read this blog, he or she may be able to use some blog content to go for further development on his or her own profession. I hope that this one hand will make a little help to develop construction industry of the country like Thailand and if this grows through many hands, my dream could come true. If you have the same ideology ..... Please continue reading.

This blog is for construction industry of the country like Thailand.

In my personal opinion, I believe construction is one of an industry that is a locomotive to drive a development of any country. By building our homes, our cities, it can create jobs for several following careers. When the economy is like a bear, this industry fell down first. But when the economy becomes a bull, this industry boomed first (which I'm sure it is the same in almost all countries). Of course, urban planning, master plan for the development of cities, transportation routes and other infrastructures have to be wisely prepared with an utmost care of the environment conservation in parallel with the bustle of construction works that came from the country's investment.

What area of our construction industry that still need to be enhanced.

In my personal opinion (again), I believe technical skill of most individual like Thai worker in construction works is second to none. They can twist their modifiable idea to tackle the onsite problem well. The major construction companies in the country like Thailand possess good technically skill and have developed a good deal of capacity in building large structures. Even though we are not so advanced in innovation of design and invention of modern tools, machines or computer software to support new construction technologies that enable quick, safe and cost effective way of construction like other prosperous countries, we are keen to buy and learn from them.

This blog is, therefore, not focused on construction techniques or engineering technology or even the theories of project management or construction management which I admit there are experts from various institutions who are better than myself on those perspectives. These experts can be the leader for the development of the construction industry of the country like Thailand in those respects.

In my personal opinion (again), the area of our construction industry that still need to be enhanced, falls into laying the national foundations of the rules of law for making and administration of construction contracts with fair regulations and meeting international standards. Legislation and law enforcement should be provided to control the contractual obligations of the parties by a specialist who understands thoroughly the construction process. As well, a laying down of alternative disputes resolution (ADR) rules regarding the preliminary negotiation/mediation process to settle disputes between the parties is consequently needed together with an improvement on arbitration process specifically for disputes in construction. As far as non-settlement by ADR and raising into court litigation, if a civil court for construction cases can be established for construction sector, it will be of great benefit to the development of the construction industry for the country like Thailand.

If standard forms of construction contracts, contract administration rules and construction disputes resolution protocols have started to have been laid down as a strong national foundation and have gradually been improved in the country like Thailand from now on, along with the study and making reference with widely accepted international practices (which inevitably need to improve English skills of our nation in this regard), it is believed that local architects, local engineers, local contractors, and other related practitioners as well as local developers will, after all, be able to upgrade their jobs or their investments internationally in the construction of any major projects in this world.

The next episode will talk about “International standard construction contracts” that we should study. If interested, please follow .....

  10. Hi Khun Prasith,

I think I may be too late positing my comment where given that I have just discovered your blog five years later after it first started. Anyways, I just would like to express my appreciation to all of your articles in this blog which are really helpful for researchers and practitioners, especially for someone like me who is a construction lawyer and a postgrad law student. I think I also share your (former) dream that one day Thai construction industry may develop to stand at the same level with industrialized nations. Hope you continue posting and hope our path may cross some day!
